Transformer Technicians
Get started in electrical transformer training with the Eugene-Springfield JATC. This is an excellent entry point to a career as a transformer technician with an electric utility.
Transformer technicians perform conversions, testing, repair and maintenance on transformers and switches, cleans and tests protective equipment, and maintains records.
Typical Duties
Transformer technicians perform a variety of duties, but the most common daily activities include:
- Receive new transformers, test (TTR and megger), number, and enter into stock and database
- Issuing transformers to crews
- Receiving transformers removed from service
- Repairing and repainting transformers
- Maintaining storage area and transformer shop
- Loss testing transformers received from field
- Repairing and modifying padmounted high voltage switches as needed
- Test, issue, repair and exchange protective equipment and tools for crews
- Record keeping, storage, and related activities concerning PCB’s, maintaining transformer oil supply, and filtering and testing oil
Electrical Transformer Training – Equipment
The equipment used by transformer technicians varies from simple to complex. Safety to oneself and others is always the first consideration when operating this equipment.
Commonly used equipment by technicians:
- Electric hoists
- Forklifts
- Pallet dolly
- Megger
- Transformer turns ratio tester
- Multimeter
- Paint gun
- Oil tester
- Glove inflator
- High voltage glove tester
- Glove washer
- Drill press, hand tools, and welding equipment.
Although this is not a comprehensive list of the type of equipment used, it does give an example for anyone getting started with electrical transformer training as a transformer technician.
